Open Data Explorer

A lightweight interface for browsing and comparing public datasets without a spreadsheet.

Problem

Published open data is often technically available but practically hard to read for non-specialists.

Context

Built as a learning project using publicly available sample datasets.

My role

Design and full-stack implementation.

Solution

A filterable table plus simple comparison charts, with plain-language descriptions of every field.

Key features

  • Field dictionary written in plain language
  • Client-side filtering and comparison
  • Shareable views via URL state
  • Accessible chart alternatives as data tables

Architecture overview

Accessibility

Every chart has an equivalent data table and no meaning depends on color alone.

Security

Read-only public data with no authentication surface.

Outcome

Makes a dataset understandable in a couple of minutes rather than an afternoon.

Lessons learned

  • A field dictionary is the highest-value feature in any data tool.
  • URL state beats a saved-view feature for a small project.
